It’s June, which means you have swapped your sandals for some cozy boots. You may think foot care stops at wearing boots in the winter, but there is much more to adequate winter foot care than just Ugg boots. Here are three important considerations for your feet this winter:
Climate Control – Keep Your Feet Warm and Dry
You will be spending a lot of time in closed shoes such as boots this winter. The waterproof material of the boots is great in keeping the feet dry and warm, but coupled with some warm socks you may find your feet sweat a little bit. Damp feet are a breeding ground for bacterial infections! Socks made of natural breathable material such as bamboo can help wick away moisture – even though cotton is a natural fiber, you’ll find it will absorb the sweat rather than wick moisture away.
Dry Skin Risks Calluses – Moisturise!
Dry cracked heels can be a product of winter. Cold air cannot hold as much humidity so in winter are skin tends to dry out, and this is not exclusive to just our feet. The dry skin can build up in layers resulting in calluses, which could then split and bleed opening your feet to bacteria. A simple solution for dry skin is to rub Vaseline into your heels after a bath or shower to keep your skin supple and smooth is a good home remedy for those dry heels.
To get rid of dry and flaky skin, you can soak your feet in warm water and exfoliate using a pumice stone. Always follow with a moisturiser to keep the feet looking supple.
Be Snow Smart – Properly Fitted Ski Boots are Important
Winter is slope season! But, It’s important to think about your extremities when hitting the snow. Can you wiggle your toes in the boots but still have stability (immobility) in the heel, instep and ball of your foot? It’s important to use ski boots that fit properly.
