The IUD is a common form of birth control in Australia. The IUD (Intrauterine Device) is a small contraceptive device that is placed into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Lasting up to 8 years, it is a commonly used long-lasting, affordable, and reversible form of contraception.
Eligible Medicare card holders can currently access bulk-billed IUD consultations and insertion procedures with Dr Emma Hattle.
How is an IUD inserted?
IUD is an intrauterine device that is inserted through the cervix and is placed in the uterus, and can be done by a GP who has undergone further training in IUD insertion. According to Sexual Health Victoria, the IUD is a contraceptive that is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
There are two main types of IUDs available in Australia:
- Hormonal IUDs (e.g., Mirena, Kyleena): Releases progestogen (a synthetic hormone that imitates the effects of progesterone) to prevent pregnancy
- Copper IUDs: Release copper ions that interfere with sperm and egg.
Both types of IUDs are reported to be more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used as intended, and can be inserted by a trained general practitioner. In your pre-consult, you can discuss with your GP which IUD option may be suitable for your individual circumstances.
What to Expect After an IUD Insertion
Following an IUD insertion, it is common to experience mild cramping, spotting, or light bleeding for a few days. Some people may notice changes to their menstrual cycle during the first few months after insertion, depending on the type of IUD used.
Most patients are able to return to their usual daily activities on the same day, although some may prefer to rest if they experience discomfort. Your doctor will discuss what to expect after the procedure and provide advice about managing any temporary symptoms.
If you are considering an IUD insertion in Melbourne, your GP can discuss the procedure, expected recovery, and any questions you may have during your pre-consult appointment.
Benefits of an IUD
An IUD is a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) that provides ongoing contraception without the need for daily medication. Depending on the type selected, an IUD can remain effective for several years before replacement is required.
Some potential benefits of an IUD may include:
- Long-term contraception
- A reversible form of birth control
- No daily action required once inserted
- Hormonal and non-hormonal options are available
- Suitable for many people seeking a long-acting contraceptive option
The most appropriate contraceptive choice varies from person to person. Your GP can discuss available options and help determine whether an IUD may be suitable for your individual circumstances.
Booking an IUD insertion: Pre-Consult
Before booking the procedure, you must have a consultation with your GP.
The pre-consult will involve reviewing medical history, discussing IUD options, answering questions and explaining the insertion process.
Patients considering an IUD insertion in Melbourne can use this appointment to discuss the procedure, suitability, expected recovery and any questions they may have before proceeding.

- Suitability
- Fitting procedure & timing of insertion with menstrual cycle
- Risks and benefits
- Prescribing the device, which the patient must pick up from the pharmacy
- STI screening: Your doctor may recommend testing for sexually transmitted infections, if you are at increased risk, as an infection can increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease if an IUD is inserted.
- Pregnancy test: A pregnancy test is generally recommended before IUD insertion to ensure no pregnancy is present.
During the pre-consult appointment, you will also receive a script for the IUD device. You will need to obtain the device from a pharmacy and bring it to your insertion appointment. You will be responsible for the cost of the IUD. Estimated cost for the device is
- Concession – $6.40

An IUD can be removed at any time by a trained healthcare professional. Some people choose removal because the device has reached the end of its recommended lifespan, while others may wish to change contraception methods, plan a pregnancy, or discuss symptoms they are experiencing.
If you are considering an IUD removal in Melbourne, your doctor can discuss your reasons for removal and any alternative contraceptive options that may be appropriate for your circumstances.
During an IUD removal appointment, the doctor will gently remove the device through the cervix. The procedure is often completed in a short consultation, although individual experiences can vary.
If you are seeking an IUD removal in Melbourne, your doctor can discuss the process, answer any questions, and advise whether replacement with a new device can be completed at the same time if appropriate.
