IUD insertion & Removal

Home » IUD insertion & Removal

The IUD is a common form of birth control in Australia. The IUD (Intrauterine Device) is a small contraceptive device that is placed into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Lasting up to 8 years, it is popular as a long-lasting, affordable, effective, reversible and safe form of contraception.

How is an IUD inserted?

IUD is an intrauterine device that is inserted through the cervix and is placed in the uterus, and can be done by a GP who has undergone further training in IUD insertion. According to Sexual Health Victoria, the IUD is a contraceptive that is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

There are two main types of IUDs available in Australia:

  • Hormonal IUDs (e.g., Mirena, Kyleena): Releases progestogen (a synthetic hormone that imitates the effects of progesterone) to prevent pregnancy
  • Copper IUDs: Release copper ions that interfere with sperm and egg.

Both types of IUDs are over 99% effective and can be inserted by a trained general practitioner. In your pre-consult, you can discuss with your GP the best IUD option for you.

Booking an IUD insertion: Pre-Consult

Before booking the procedure, you must have a consultation with your GP.

The pre-consult will involve reviewing medical history, discussing IUD options, answering questions and explaining the insertion process.

Dr Emma Hattle can complete IUD insertions, after a pre-consult with her.

Dr Emma Hattle, Dr Joey Siu, Dr Magdalena Matthews and Dr Deepti Bhatt are all able to complete IUD removals in the clinic.

During this initial consult, the doctor will discuss

  • Suitability
  • Fitting procedure & timing of insertion with menstrual cycle
  • Risks and benefits
  • Prescribing the device, which the patient must pick up from the pharmacy
  • STI screening: Your doctor may recommend testing for sexually transmitted infections, if you are at increased risk, as an infection can increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease if an IUD is inserted.
  • Pregnancy test: A pregnancy test is generally recommended before IUD insertion to ensure no pregnancy is present.

During the pre-consult appointment, you will also receive a script for the IUD device. You will need to obtain the device from a pharmacy and bring it to your insertion appointment. You will be responsible for the cost of the IUD. Estimated cost for the device is

  • Concession – $6.40
  • Medicare – $30.60
  • Private – (if you don’t have medicare) $171.39

If you are unfamiliar or uncertain about an IUD and want to discuss contraceptive options, we recommend a 30-minute consult with Dr. Emma.

If you are familiar with the IUD and are confident in choosing this contraceptive method, we recommend a 15 minute appointment with Dr. Emma.

Pre-consults can be booked online, by choosing a standard appointment with Dr Emma Hattle. When booking an IUD insertion or removal, please call 03) 9393 3900 to speak with our friendly reception staff.
