Iron infusions

Home » Iron infusions

Iron infusions are a treatment to boost iron levels in people with iron deficiency. Iron infusions are a simple and common procedure, completed with a GP and nurse at South Melbourne Medical Hub.

Booking an iron infusion

If you suspect that you have low iron levels or cannot tolerate iron supplements, book an appointment with a GP consulting at South Melbourne Medical Hub to discuss if an iron infusion is right for you.

In your initial consultation, you will discuss your symptoms and any concerns with the doctor. The doctor will arrange an iron studies blood test to determine your iron levels, which must be completed before the infusion.

If an iron infusion is necessary, our nurses or admin team will contact you to book in the procedure. The iron infusion takes approximately 1 hour, and will be completed by a GP and a nurse who will monitor you in the treatment room.

Dr. Emma Hattle, Dr Jeet Garud, Dr Ciaran Laughlin, Dr Magdalena Matthews and Dr Joey Siu are all able to complete iron infusions.

Why is iron important?

Iron is used by your body to make the molecule called haemoglobin. Haemoglobin within your red blood cells carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. If your iron or haemoglobin are low, you can feel tired and have reduced energy. If your body is not able to make haemoglobin because your iron is too low, then you can have what is called iron deficiency anaemia.

Iron deficiency is common and can result from excessive blood loss or inadequate dietary iron intake.

Symptoms of Iron Deficiency

  • Fatigue or exhaustion
  • Physical weakness
  • Lack of concentration
  • Pale skin
  • Dizziness

People at Risk of Iron Deficiency

  • People who lose blood during menstruation ( women/people with uteruses)
  • Frequent blood donors
  • Vegans or vegetarians
  • People with an unbalanced diet.

What is intravenous iron?

Intravenous iron means delivering iron directly into your blood stream through a cannula inserted in your vein. The cannula is attached to a drip that contains iron and sterile salt solution. This fluid then enters your system through an infusion pump which pushes the iron solution into your blood stream for absorption.
